I’ve had a beard since my early twenties and have tried lots of different styles. A medium beard style is just one of the few I’ve gone through.
In this post, I’ll go through everything you need to know about growing a medium beard or if you’re coming from a long beard and want to try something new then you’re in the right place..
Understanding Your Face Shape
The key to a great beard starts with understanding your face shape.
We all have different looks so its important to know what beard style and how long would go well with what face.
If you have a round face, then I would go for beard styles that make your face look longer and pointy. A long beard might do the trick here but you can have shorter/medium sides.
Square faces have a strong jawline. A rounded beard on each of the edges of your cheek bone will make it feel soft.
And if you’ve got an oval face, you’re lucky. You can potentially try any style.
But no matter what your face shape is, you can have a medium beard. Once you’ve found the beard you want, you can start trimming to style.
Top Medium Beard Styles to Consider
There are quite a lot of medium beard styles to choose from.
Here’s a breakdown of some standout styles that can really enahce the way you look:
The Refined Look: This style is all about clean lines and an even length. It’s suited for those who want a tidy appearance, making it a great choice for casual events and work.
I’ve written a great post on getting a clean look by focusing on the neck beard.
The Casual Look: This look brings character to your beard with different lengths and being slightly untidy. Its ideal if you;re laid back with your beard care grooming habits. BUT has a great balance of style and being carefree.
The Modern Look: If you like precision, then this is your look. The edges give a sculpted shape and draw attention to more of your facial features.
I personally like this look. It’s for someone who wants to blend sharpness with style to create a striking visual appearance.
The Rugged Look: This style is more natural than tidy which gives off a rugged look. But that look is intentional.
Essential Beard Care Tools
Having the right tools is half the work.
Invest in a quality trimmer with multiple length settings. That will give you the ability to trim in small stages. But make sure you become familiar with the trimmer or use something you already know.
A wooden beard comb and a set of scissors are essential for daily upkeep. I comb my beard all the time and when I need to I snip off stray hairs.
If your beard is medium-long, I’d also use a beard brush distribute oils evenly and keep your beard looking neat.
Beard Care Routine
It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a short beard, a long beard or a medium beard style. Your beard needs to be taken care of.
The best way to do that is by keeping it clean.
Wash regularly and pat to dry with warm water. And use a few drops of beard oil to hydrate your beard hairs and keep the skin underneath alive.
If the skin underneath becomes dry, you’ll get flake and beardruff which isn’t ideal.
Trimming Technique for Medium Beard Styles
Trimming a medium beard has a technique to it.
Always start with a clean, dry beard for the best results as you would any length of beard.
Use your trimmer to define the neckline and cheeklines, creating a neat outline. If you need to use a tool to shape the line, then go ahead.
Trim in the direction of where your hair grows and trim a little at a time to give your more control. There’s no rush and if you are in a hurry, try and set enough time aside to trim.
Finish by using scissors to snip away any stubborn, out-of-place hairs.
Tips and Tricks
A bit of beard balm or wax can help to keep your beard shape. Use as much as you need but try not to over do it. Too much can lead to a greasy beard.
Experiment with different styles until you find what works best for you. It might take a few tries but you’l get there in the end.
Ask someone to have a look at your face when you’ve finished. They’ll be able to see and stray hairs that you’ve missed.
And they’ll tell you if your face looks symetrical or not!
Common Challenges and Solutions For All Beards
Itching is common in the early days but can be releieved with regular moisturizing. I like to use beard cream to hydrate my beard and my skin underneath my beard.
For patchiness, patience you have to be patient. Those patches will fill up over time.
I’ve said this many times, but I’ll say it again. Asking your barber for advice or to even shape it for you is ok! They are professionals.
Embrace Your Beard into Your Wardrobe Style
Your beard is a pert of your style. Just as you dress your pants and shirt to match, you need to dress to match with your beard.
Take color into consideration too. A darker beard will match a darker set of clothes while I ligher beard will go with something that stands out a bit more.
I got a black beard but with strands grey so I like to wear a pair of jeans with a light t-shirt. But if its a little colder, I’ll put on a navy blue hoodie.
It goes well with my beard and it makes me look younger!
A medium beard style enhances your look and expresses your individuality.
The important thing to know is that any beard is not just about style. Its about the care and maintenance you provide.
With the right beard care kit, practising the techniques, and a bit of patience, you can have a beard that looks great but feels great too.
So, take these tips, find your style, and step into the world with confidence. Your perfect medium beard awaits!
