Growing a beard is one of the greatest fashion statements that a man can have. Its an expression of style and it adds character to probably an already great personality.

But you know the famous saying, “With a great beard, comes a great amount of responsibility”. I’m kidding.

Having a great beard does mean you need to take care of it. And a good beard wash routine will set the tone for keeping your beard clean, healthy and stylish.

In this post, I’ll talk about how to take care of your beard with the best beard wash treatment your beard can get.

The Basics of Beard Hygiene

The foundation of a great beard starts with cleanliness.

A clean beard is not just about the way it looks after you’ve used some beard oil and beard balm and combed it throughout the day. Even though all these are very important!

It’s about good hygiene. Washing your beard regularly prevents the build-up of oils, dirt, and dead skin cells.

A beard that isn’t given a good beard wash on a regular basis can lead to itchiness, dandruff, and even skin irritation.

By regularly washing your beard, you’re taking the first step toward a clean and comfortable beard experience.

Your Beard is Unique

Every beard is unique. So it needs to be treated with its own personalised care.

Some beards are thick and bushy while other beards are fine and sparse. Your beard’s texture and how it grows can influence how you should care for it.

So the first question you need to ask yourself is, “What is my beard like? How thick is it? How soft is it?” Knowing the answers to these questions will help you create a good beard wash routine.

For example, my beard is thick (I’m pictured below). I know that if I don’t wash and condition it every 2 days or so, it’ll start to feel rough and harsh. I don’t enjoy that!

So I make sure I wash my beard and condition it every 2 days. I have a beard care grooming routine, so I make it a part of that.

Buying the Right Beard Wash

There are so many beard wash products out there. In a way, it’s great that there’s so much choice. It means there is something for everyone.

But choosing the right beard wash is important!

I like to use a beard wash that has natural ingredients because I don’t want to impact my beard’s natural growth. It’s a personal preference but one that works for me.

And in my opinion, a beard wash with chemicals in it will damage your beard by making it dry.

Always read the label when buying any beard products.

The Washing Technique

How hard can it be right? You’ve just got to wash your beard.

There is actually an art to washing. Something I’ve learned over many years of trying different things.

Start with warm water. Too hot and you could damage your beard and skin. And too cold and you’ll end up with a dry beard because it closes the skin pores.

So use warm water to open those pores and gently massage your beard with a small amount of beard wash. It’s okay to rub it across your face too.

Be thorough but be gentle.

Then when you’ve covered your whole face, rinse away. Make sure you don’t leave any beard wash residue behind as it can lead to your skin becoming itchy.

How Often Should You Beard Wash?

You don’t want to overwash.

Mostly because you don’t need to. Beard care should be relaxing, so I don’t want you to get the impression that you should be washing your beard all the time.

I wash my beard every 2 days. That’s about 3 times a week which I find is a good balance. But you can choose depending on your beard and your lifestyle.

Try to notice your beard more and adjust your routine as needed to keep it fresh and clean without drying it out.

Common Washing Pitfalls

When I was younger, lived with my parents and just starting to grow a beard, I used whichever shampoo we had in our bathroom to clean my hair, body and beard.

I learned that each part of your body needs different care.

So if there’s a single tip, I can give you; it’s to avoid using regular shampoo. Invest in a beard shampoo and conditioner.

Other shampoos can be too hard for your beard and might make your beard dry and hard.

Another tip you can use to avoid damaging your beard growth is to shower or bath with warm water.

I love a hot shower, but my beard doesn’t. So it’s a compromise that I have to make if I want that fuller-looking and healthy beard.

The Importance of Conditioning

Beard washing is just the first step. Conditioning is step number two. And is equally important.

After washing, apply a few drops of beard oil or beard conditioner to add moisture and keep your beard feeling soft.

This makes your beard more comfortable to wear and also makes it easier to style.

Don’t Forget to Exfoliate

Underneath your beard is your skin, and it usually gets forgotten about.

You can remove dead skin cells, preventing dandruff and have better beard growth if you exfoliate.

Use a gentle scrub or a soft beard brush once a week to keep your skin healthy by removing the dirt that has built up over the week.

Drying Your Beard Properly

How you dry your beard can make a big difference in its appearance and health.

Rubbing harshly will damage your beard and maybe even your skin.

So I’d recommend patting your beard gently with a towel to remove excess water, then let it air dry or use a blow dryer on a cool setting.

Upkeep Between Each Beard Wash

Keeping your beard in top shape between washes is all about daily care.

I use a beard comb (I never leave the house without it) to straighten my beard hair and spread oils throughout my beard.

A little beard oil goes a long way in keeping my beard looking, feeling good and smelling good. All. Day. Long.

Addressing Common Questions

Below are a set of questions that I had when I got started. I’ve listed them out for you so you can get the answers you need.

QuestionAnswer
How do I handle beard dandruff?Beard dandruff, or ‘beardruff,’ can be uncomfortable. It’s caused by dry skin underneath your beard.

To tackle beard dandruff, use a gentle beard wash and don’t over-wash your beard because you still want natural oils.

After washing, apply a beard oil or balm to keep the skin hydrated.

Exfoliating the skin under your beard once a week can also help.
How many times should I wash my beard?2-3 times a week is generally recommended. But it can depend on things like your skin and beard type.

If you have oily skin, you might need to wash your beard more often. On the other hand, if you have dry skin you might wash it less often.
Can I use hair shampoo on my beard? It is possible, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Beard washes are designed with milder ingredients suitable for your face and beard, helping to maintain a good balance.
What if my beard is itchy? To combat itchiness, thoroughly rinse out all products while washing.

Using a moisturizer or beard oil after washing can help hydrate the skin and reduce irritation.

Regularly combing your beard can also help by removing dead skin cells.
Should I condition my beard, and how often?Yes, you should!

Using a beard conditioner or beard oil after washing can help moisturize and soften your beard.

You can condition every time you wash your beard.
Is it necessary to use a beard brush or comb, and why?Using a beard brush or comb is recommended for beard care grooming.

These tools help spread the natural oils produced by your skin throughout your beard, keeping it moisturized and healthy.
Can I use beard oil daily, and how do I apply it?Yes, you can!

I do it to keep my beard soft and hydrated.

The best time to apply beard oil is right after you wash your beard or after a shower when your hair and skin are still slightly wet.

Just a few drops are usually enough. Rub the oil between your palms and gently work it through your beard, making sure to reach the skin underneath.

Then use a comb or brush to distribute the oil evenly.

Taking care of your beard is an ongoing journey, one that requires constant attention and dedication.

With these tips and tricks, you’re well-equipped to keep your beard looking its best.

Whether you’re new to the beard game or a seasoned pro, a clean beard wash is needed for all beard styles and lengths.

Happy grooming!
