Beard butter is one of those products I wasn’t sure about using when I got serious about my beard care grooming routine. I was already using beard oil and balm so did I even need it?

What even is beard butter?

In this blog post, I’ll share everything you need to know about this essential grooming product. Whether you’ve been grooming your beard for a while or are just starting out, I’ve got you covered.

From understanding what beard butter is to how often you should use it, I’ll give you some real practical tips from experience to help you achieve the best results for your beard.

What is Beard Butter?

Beard butter is a lot like a beard moisturiser. It’s intended to groom and condition your beard and the skin underneath it.

But unlike beard oil, which is oil-based, beard butter is made of natural oils and butters, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, and essential oils – all in one. They work together to moisturize, soften, and keep unruly facial hair in check so your beard can stay looking great all day long.

When choosing beard butter, I was looking for 3 main things;

  1. A product that is high-quality
  2. It has natural ingredients and
  3. It avoids those with harsh chemicals and fragrances chemically inserted.

I prefer the natural smell butters and oils come with!

If you’re thinking of buying beard butter, make sure you read the label carefully. Whatever you put on your beard has a long-lasting effect.

How to Choose the Right Beard Butter

You want to get a beard butter that suits your facial hair.

If you have a coarse or thick beard, go for a heavier butter with rich, moisturizing ingredients like shea butter. And for short beards, a lighter, fast-absorbing butter might be a better idea.

Always take into consideration fragrance and consistency. You might like something that’s unscented. That’s okay too!

Others, like me, enjoy the subtle aroma of essential oils. My favourite is cedarwood but I sometimes use sandalwood too.

Pay attention to the consistency of the butter. A softer consistency may be easier to apply which is great if you’ve got a long beard. A firmer butter provides better hold for shaping and styling your beard. Which is also goo for long beards but better for short to medium beards, IMO.

How to Use Beard Butter

This is one of my favourite YouTube channels. And I like the demo in this video because its short and to the point.

Applying beard butter is an easy process. You apply it in your daily grooming routine.

  1. Start by scooping a small amount of butter onto your fingertips
  2. Then massage it between your palms to warm it up and soften it
  3. Finally, work the butter evenly through your beard, making sure to reach the roots and skin.

When should you apply it?

Apply beard butter to a clean, slightly damp beard. This helps to lock in moisture and ensures the butter is evenly spread throughout your whole beard.

Use your trusty beard comb or beard brush to help spread the butter throughout your beard and style it however you want.

How much should you apply?

Avoid applying too much beard butter. This can cause your beard to feel greasy or heavy.

Start with a small amount and then add more if you need to. Focusing on those areas that need extra hydration or control such as wild hairs – which you should probably trim or snip off anyway!

How often should I use beard butter?

It depends on your needs and preferences.

I like to use it every time I go out – that might be a couple of times a week.

But I know of some people who use it daily. My rule of thumb is that if your beard is dry or coarse use beard butter regularly. It really does help moisturise your beard making it look fuller and healthier.

Just keep an eye on how your beard looks and you’ll know. If it starts to feel dry or unruly between applications, you may need to increase the frequency of use.

But if your beard feels greasy or weighed down, you may be using it too much or too often.

Does beard butter maintain beard health?

Using beard butter, like any other product does help with beard health. But you still need to take care of your beard’s hygiene.

Keeping your beard clean by washing it regularly with a beard shampoo helps remove dirt, oil, and too much use of products – trust me, that’s something you want to avoid.

I once used my moustache wax so much when growing my handlebar that when I showered, it took a while to get it all out.

Other than keeping your beard clean, body hydration is also key for beard health. Your beard grows on your skin so it’s important your skin is hydrated.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and hair hydrated from the inside out.

Additionally, consider using beard oil with beard butter to provide extra nourishment and protection.

Finally, don’t forget to trim your beard regularly to remove split ends and grow your beard in the direction you want. A well-maintained beard looks great and feels comfortable and manageable.

What other products can I use with beard butter?

Using beard butter is great but it’s not the only product you should use.

Consider using other grooming essentials such as beard oil, beard balm, and beard wash into your routine to get the best damn beard you can get.

Recently I’ve been getting a lot of greys. I like my greys but it suggests I might not be looking after myself. Or I might be stressed because of work or other life issues. So to counter that, to keep my body and beard healthy, I’ve been taking a tablet of Wellman multivitamins every day.

In fact, I’ve got an Amazon subscription for it, so I get a new 30-pack every month. So far so good, I’d say.

To wrap up, beard butter is a grooming product that provides essential hydration and nourishment for your beard and the skin underneath it.

By using beard butter in your daily grooming routine, you can get a healthier, more manageable beard.

But always remember to pay attention to your beard’s needs and adjust your routine for the best results. With the right care and attention, you can enjoy a beard that looks and feels its best every day.
